Rowan Class

Rowan Class, (home to our reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children), is taught by Mrs Sophie Lowde.  Our teaching assistant is Miss Bex Brown.

Diverse Britain

This half term in PSHE, we will learn  how we can have a positive
impact on groups and communities to which we belong.

 Maths

We follow the White Rose Scheme. This term, our focus in Year One is Position and direction, Place Value up to 100, money and time. In Year Two we will focus on time, statistics and position and direction.

In Reception, our focus this term is on sharing and grouping.

Literacy

In Literacy, we are looking at the text Bringing the rain to Kapiti Plain to go alongside our Geography unit on Africa. We will look at retelling the story and also write an information leaflet as our final write.

Phonics

We use Little Wandle as our phonics scheme. Phonics is taught daily in Reception and Year One. Year Two have a daily reading session. We also give extra support to children needing it using the keep-up and catch-up sessions.

Little Wandle provides resources for parents to support phonics learning at home on their website.

The children have phonics books in Year One and a folder in Reception.

Children will take home decodable phonics books which will match their knowledge of sounds and tricky words. We read these books 3x a week in school with a different purpose each time.

Decoding - reading the book and sound out unfamiliar words.

Prosody - reading with expression, attention to punctuation, making reading sound more natural.

Comprehension - understanding what is being read, talking about the story and asking questions.

Topic

Our half term topic is Africa.

In DT this term, we will be focusing on making smoothies and we will finish with making our own smoothies based on our preferences!

In Science we will be learning all about Mini-beasts! We will be exploring their habitats, what they need to survive and grouping mini-beasts.

Forest School

We are looking forward to getting outside and enjoying Forest School sessions this half term.

Up in the forest school area we have a mud kitchen, den building and gardening equipment and loads of lovely trees and shrubs to explore and find minibeasts within!

Good to Know

Each child has a home reading book and reading record to take home. These are changed on a Wednesday. We also take home a book for pleasure which you can share with your child.

In Rowan class we do P.E on Tuesday afternoons. The children come to and from school in their P.E kits.

The Year 1 and 2 children have their weekly spelling tests on a Friday.
